Can CBT for insomnia treatment affect my ability to drive?

Many of our patients are worried that when they take on the sleep restriction element of treatment, which involves spending less time in bed in order to create a stronger drive to sleep, they will be too tired during the day to stay safe whilst driving.

However, whilst the restriction of sleep can cause daytime tiredness a recent trial published in Sleep Medicine Journal found that the average decrease in sleep was only 32 minutes and most importantly this did not change how sleepy a patient felt, their reaction times or their ability to drive.

As sleep restriction therapy is so effective in treating insomnia it is hoped that these results will encourage more people to take up the treatment.
