Trying to sleep? Proof it won’t work

I always tell my patients that the harder they try to sleep the less chance there is of nodding off. Read an interesting article today which proves this to be true. When a group of good sleepers were offered a financial reward to get to sleep quickly the results showed that the higher their intention was to fall asleep, the more fragmented their sleep became and the poorer the quality. This supports the theory that if we all worried about sleep and focused on it in the way that insomniacs do, then we would all sleep badly!
